Tuska Festival 2018 – Day by Day Review

Category: ArticlesConcert Reviews

There is a first time for everything, and so I had my first ever at Tuska festival. I had not much to judge it from beforehand, other than the stories of others enjoying the festival the previous years. Sadly we weren’t blessed with brilliant weather as they had predicted, but all in all it didn’t pour down on us, so we were good. Some of us (yes, that is me) even suffered a slight sunburn from it.

The festival wasn’t as big as other festivals I’ve had experienced, yet it was a decent and good size. It had three stages not too far away from each other, which was quite nice, as it didn’t take long to walk from one to another. The main stage and the tent were pretty close to each other, but never would a band play at the same time on both of them, so sound wise it wasn’t a bother at all...

After the release of their new album ‘Feathers & Flesh’, Avatar decided to go on a tour as well. Luckily, they decided to come to The Netherlands during and tour, and it wasn’t a bad decision. This show would be the biggest sold out headlining show they had ever done, which of course already says a lot about the quality of the band. However, their quality isn’t exactly ‘confirmed’ until after the concert, and so I had to check it out myself as well. Of course, I was excited to see them, after such an amazing album release, and my previous experiences.

The first band was another band from Sweden. They were called The Last Band, despite playing first. It became clear to me that the crowd was purely there for Avatar, as not many seemed to have heard of them before...

Last Saturday evening I finally went to see Bring Me The Horizon live in 013, Tilburg, and I must stay that I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Of course, after all the events going on in Europe at the moment, I was a little nervous to go to the sold-out concert, but I haven’t regretted it one bit — and I felt quite safe as well, thanks to the security!

Beartooth was the first to take the stage. A fantastic opener, seldom have I seen such an energetic first pre-act to take the stage. Their sound was perfect. Their ability to play live should be admired, as they easily got the crowd to join them. When they asked to turn the whole floor into one giant moshpit, they obeyed. It was something I ‘ve never seen a pre-act do before...

Last Saturday, the 17th of October, I went to visit the Heavy Metal Maniacs Festival in P60, Amstelveen. It was a small festival, with six bands in the line-up and a single stage. Though there were only six bands playing, there was a great variety of genres. I’ll be giving you a short review of the amazing day I’ve had.

The band to start the day was Snaggletoöth, a Dutch Motörhead cover band, and had all the right to call themselves that. Not only did they sound quite like Motörhead, but the looks were alike as well. They mostly played some classics, such as “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill”, which was greatly appreciated by the crowd. It was a great band to start off with, which surely warmed us up for what was about to come.

Junkyard Drive was the second band to take the sta...

Powerwolf @ Doornroosje, Nijmegen – 04.10.2015

On Sunday the 4th of October I went to see Powerwolf in Nijmegen at the venue Doornroosje. My friends had bought me a ticket for my birthday, and I must say I was quite excited to see them, even if their newest album did disappoint me a little.

Xandria was the first band to take the stage. The Female fronted Symphonic Metal band surely surprised me. I had heard of the name before, but hadn’t paid much attention to them. Yet, their performance surely changed that. Their songs were unique, both their music and the lyrics. Her voice reminded me of Tarja Turunen, and fitted the music perfectly. The solos they played were crazy and beyond imagination, even though the guitar player made it look like it was so easy...
